Theatre students bring home medals

Enterprise High School’s theatre department competed strongly November 2 in the district Alabama theatre festival, Trumbauer.

Twenty-two high schools in the district traveled to Opelika High School ready to act, sing, present designs, etc. to prove they meet the qualifications to compete December 5-7 at the state festival.

The students in Advanced Theatre, instructed by Veronica Stephenson, were required to compete and members of Drama Club were encouraged to participate as well.

Months of hard work and self-motivation went into preparing the right performance pieces and creating the technical individual events.

Senior Makayla Harvey, who competed for the first time in costume and scene design, said, “I prepared for Trumbauer by first picking a show to theme my designs around.  I thought of a way to present the shows in a way that we haven’t seen before. For my costumes, I picked the characters I wanted to look different, so that I can add my personal touch to them. I sketched the designs, picked the colors, drew my accessories, bought fabric swatches, and got my binder together. I thought the day would go by a little faster than it did, and I wasn’t expecting to be so nervous.”

Thespians spent the day going to other rooms to support fellow competitors, watch plays, and anxiously wait for their time to meet with the judges in their category.

Our school competed with the play Tracks, which will be performed November 14 in the PAC at 6:00 p.m.

Meya Reid was awarded All-Star Cast member and Kendall Holland was awarded Best Supporting Actor for their performance in the show.

“Now it’s the rewards that you have to worry about. Waiting for your name to be called is so terrifying. The anticipation of wanting to go to state is so unreal. Once your category is called, everything freezes. Hearing your name get called for superior is such a rush. The excitement flows, the crowd cheering and your friends giving you high fives and pats on the back is so worth the stress,” senior Gabriel Powell said.
