Wildcats overcome adversity

The Wildcats ended their season in the Area Tournament against Jeff Davis on Feb 4.

This game brought a long and difficult season to a close for the Wildcats.

From family issues, to disciplinary commitments, to simply needing to take a test, the team has had to work around a host of obstacles in order to make progress this season.

Two of the four seniors were unable to play for the entire season due to injuries.

Coach Rhett Harrelson said, “This past year, we had so many distractions. So many things, that I feel like, as a coach, you go back and reflect and look at things that maybe set you back or put you forward. Trying to limit those distractions is really important.”

On top of that, about 75% of the basketball team also plays football.

In order to resolve these commitments, the team alternates their athletic block to train on the football field. Additionally, the two teams combine to complete three weight-trainings a week together.

“It’s a big commitment to want to play basketball. But I think in order to be good and become a special team, a team that can be successful, you’ve got to buy into being here and showing up and doing things the right way,” coach Rhett Harrelson.

Next year, Harrelson plans to play the floor to the team’s advantage.

They are already practicing to be more aggressive offensively, since most of the team have a fast and physical play-style.

In addition, they are advancing their technique by working on creating opportunities for easy lay-ups and setting up traps.

The team is only progressing forward for next year’s season.

Coach Harrelson said, “Trying to limit those distractions is important, but also some things you can’t avoid you’ve just got to take your lumps and figure out how to move on.”
